History

The Edison Museum in downtown Beaumont interprets the life and inventions of Thomas Edison and bills itself as the only facility of its kind west of the Mississippi River. It is housed in the historic Travis Street Substation, a Gulf States Utilities power station that came online in 1929. Its collection of more than 1,400 artifacts was largely assembled by GSU chief executive W. Donham Crawford, whose widow donated the collection to the museum after his death in 1984.
