History

Johnson Cemetery, also known as Johnson Memorial Park, is one of the larger burial grounds serving the Groves and Port Arthur area of southern Jefferson County, with roughly 6,000 recorded interments. It lies in Groves, a community laid out in 1916 by the Griffing brothers on land once part of a tract conveyed by industrialist John Warne Gates. Its records are among the Jefferson County cemetery listings compiled for the county historical commission by Mildred Wright.
