History
Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves traces its origins to 1898, when Charles E. Smith and the Gifford family, operators of the Crowell-Gifford furniture and casket business in Port Arthur, developed the grounds on former farmland. Under Nick Gifford and later his son-in-law Mack Alden Pond, the cemetery installed underground drainage and paved roads by 1948, making it one of the first modern perpetual-care cemeteries in the state. The roughly 90-acre park is among the largest cemeteries in southern Jefferson County, with more than 31,000 interments, and joined the Dignity Memorial network in 1998.
