History

The Karnes County Museum preserves the history of Helena, the county's original seat founded in 1852 on the San Antonio River and county seat from 1854 until the railroad bypassed the town for Karnes City. The museum complex centers on the 1873 Helena courthouse and the John Ruckman House, keeping alive the story of a once-rowdy town on the Chihuahua Road ox-cart trail from San Antonio to the coast.
