History

Helena Cemetery serves the ghost town of Helena, founded in 1852 by Thomas Ruckman and Lewis S. Owings and named for Owings's wife, Helen. Once the seat of Karnes County and the most important town between San Antonio and Goliad, with a courthouse, newspaper, hotels, and numerous saloons, Helena declined after the railroad bypassed it and the county seat moved to Karnes City in 1894. Its cemeteries, including an old Latin cemetery with 1800s Spanish-language markers, are among the few reminders of the vanished town.
