History

This cemetery lies at Panna Maria, founded on Christmas Eve 1854 by Upper Silesian immigrants and recognized as the oldest permanent Polish settlement in the United States. Father Leopold Moczygemba consecrated the community's Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, the first permanent Polish Catholic church in America, in 1856, and the settlement's cemetery was relocated to its present spot in town after the church was built over the original burial ground.
