History

This cemetery belongs to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic parish at Cestohowa (Czestochowa), a Polish farming community founded in 1874 by about forty families who moved upstream from nearby Panna Maria, the oldest Polish settlement in America. Jacob Lyssy and John Pawlik, Jr. each donated an acre of land for the burial ground, whose earliest marked grave is that of Franciscus Gawlik, who died in 1878; most markers were inscribed in Polish until the 1930s. By 2000 the cemetery held some 864 graves, including more than 75 military veterans, and it received a Texas historical marker that year.
