History

The Masonic Cemetery of Helena lies at the old town of Helena, founded in 1852 and once the seat of Karnes County. In its heyday Helena was the most important settlement between San Antonio and Goliad, home to a courthouse, hotels, saloons, and fraternal lodges, before the town faded after the railroad passed it by and the county seat was moved to Karnes City in 1894. This Masonic burial ground reflects the fraternal life of that once-thriving frontier community.
