History

The Gillett Cemetery serves the northern Karnes County town of Gillett, first settled around the Civil War at the junction of the San Antonio-Victoria and Helena-Seguin roads. Carl Edward Riedel built a mill-powering dam on Ecleto Creek in 1869, and the settlement, first called Riedelville, then Riddleville, was renamed Gillett in 1905 to honor Runge lawyer and newspaperman E. G. Gillett. Between 1910 and 1920 the town supported stores, saloons, a hotel, and a cotton gin.
