Educator and minister G. P. Bowser started this Churches of Christ college in Fort Worth in the fall of 1948 as Southern Bible Institute, with 45 students in its first class. It was founded chiefly to serve Black students shut out of segregated Texas colleges, but it never restricted admission by race. In 1949 the school got the chance to buy the grounds of the defunct Texas Military College in Terrell, and it moved there and became Southwestern Christian College by 1950. The campus is home to the Robert A. Terrell Home, an 1864 octagonal house built for the settler whose name the town bears; over the years the college has used it as a president's residence, dining hall, classroom building and student union. A 1967 fundraising campaign paid for a gymnasium, a women's dormitory and a classroom addition, and by the mid-1970s the 25-acre campus held 15 buildings. Jack Evans Sr., the college's first Black president, led it from 1967 to 2017, and since 1973 it has held Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation for associate and bachelor's degrees.
