History

German immigrant Peter Joseph Ingenhuett settled near Comfort in the 1850s and, with his wife Marie Karger, moved into town in 1867, where the family opened businesses along High Street including a hotel, livery stable, and saloon. The Ingenhuett-Karger Saloon, attributed to noted Hill Country architect Alfred Giles, stands within the Comfort Historic District, one of the best-preserved 19th-century townscapes in Texas.
