Hill Country rancher, merchant, and former Texas Ranger Charles Schreiner gave land and money to found a Presbyterian school for boys at Kerrville, and the Schreiner Institute opened in September 1923 with 95 students. For decades it was a military school; drills became optional in 1957 and ended in 1971, and the school grew into a four-year college in the 1980s and a university in 2001. Schreiner University traces its start to December 31, 1917, when Charles A. Schreiner of Kerrville set up a trust for the Presbyterian Synod of Texas worth $250,000 plus roughly 140 acres, on the condition that a preparatory school and junior college be built after World War I ended. Trustees accepted the gift in 1921, three buildings went up, and Schreiner Institute welcomed its first class of about 100 young men in September 1923, pairing high-school and junior-college courses with required military instruction. The school stayed all-male until 1932, when women began attending the junior college as commuting day students; military training was scaled back in 1957 and dropped entirely in 1969. When the preparatory program closed in 1973, the school became Schreiner College, and it grew into a four-year institution in 1982, granting its first bachelor's degrees in 1984. It took the name Schreiner University in 2001 as it began offering master's programs, and it celebrated its centennial in 2023.
