History
The Sam Bell Maxey House at 812 South Church Street in Paris was built in 1866-67 for Samuel Bell Maxey, a Confederate major general who went on to serve two terms as a U.S. senator from Texas. Designed in the High Victorian Italianate style, it remained the Maxey family home until 1966 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Restored and opened to the public in 1980, it is now operated by the Texas Historical Commission as the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site.
