History

Sylvan Cemetery was established in 1869 when Simon and Rachel Hancock donated land for a community burial ground at Sylvan, a settlement seven miles east of Paris that grew up around a school in the late 1860s. Among its oldest markers are those of a preacher buried in 1871 and a child in 1874. The surrounding community of Sylvan once supported three churches, gristmills and cotton gins before its decline, but the cemetery remains in use with several hundred interments.
