History
Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church stands in Moravia, a community named by Czech immigrants who settled the area in the 1870s. The frame church was built in 1912 on a Latin cross plan, and its elaborate interior was decorated around 1923 by the San Antonio firm of Donecker and Sons, with marbled walls, stenciled friezes, and a mural of the Ascension behind the altar. It is one of the celebrated Painted Churches of Texas and was listed on the National Register in 1983.
