History
The Yoakum Heritage Museum is housed in the early-1900s Victorian home of the J.K. Elkins family, deeded to the community in 1986, and tells the story of Yoakum, Texas's 'Leather Capital.' Established in 1981, it features a Leather Room with a photographic history of the industry and hand-tooled saddles, plus military and railroad rooms. Yoakum grew up in 1887 as a division point on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway and was once known as a tomato-shipping capital.
