History

This marker in Yoakum honors the trail drivers of Southwest Texas, the cowboys who gathered and moved great herds of cattle north during the open-range era after the Civil War. The Yoakum area served as a cattle-gathering point feeding the Chisholm Trail, along which hundreds of thousands of longhorns passed to Kansas railheads in the early 1870s. The marker stands beside the town's main historical marker near Chisholm Trail Memorial Park.
