History

St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery lies on a tract that Bernard Brown deeded to Bishop Jean-Marie Odin in 1844, part of what is regarded as the oldest rural Catholic parish in Texas, settled before the Texas Revolution. Its oldest gravestone marks the 1849 burial of Josiah D. Blackburn, and in the early years both Catholics and non-Catholics were interred here. A stone wall that once enclosed the grounds was removed in 1890, and the well-kept cemetery has since grown to more than nine hundred markers.
