History

This African American cemetery adjoins the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church about three miles east of Hallettsville, in a community originally settled by freedmen on land once patented to John Hallett. By 1883 the church had become the focal point of community life, and the burial ground grew to more than three hundred markers. Its oldest stone is that of An Gardly, who died May 15, 1888.
