History

Mossy Grove Cemetery near Hallettsville is more than a century old and holds over 230 markers, including what is considered the earliest known marked grave in Lavaca County, that of Eliza An Veal, who died in 1847 at age thirty-eight. The Livergood family, buried here, helped found and lead the neighboring Mossy Grove Methodist Church. Birth dates on the fenced, well-kept grounds reach back into the 1790s and early 1800s.
