History

This cemetery serves the town of Oakwood in northeastern Leon County, founded in 1872 as a ten-mile station on the International-Great Northern Railroad and named for the surrounding oak groves. Among those interred in Oakwood's burial grounds is Sarah Lancaster, a noted Sacred Harp composer who lived in the town from the 1880s until her death in 1918.
