History
The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center near Liberty is a component of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission that serves as the official historical records depository for ten Southeast Texas counties. Built on land donated in 1973 by former Governor Price Daniel and his wife Jean, the archival facility was dedicated in 1977 and holds more than 12,000 cubic feet of government records, manuscripts, maps, and artifacts. Its museum features the permanent exhibit 'Atascosito: The History of Southeast Texas,' named for the 1756 Spanish outpost that preceded the town of Liberty.
