History
The Museum of Texas Tech University began in 1929 as the West Texas Museum, founded by the Plains Museum Society, with historian William Curry Holden as its first director until 1969. The building was dedicated in stages and completed in 1950, and the museum now holds collections in anthropology, art, history, and natural sciences totaling nearly 9.5 million objects. Its components include the Moody Planetarium, the Natural Science Research Laboratory—the largest natural history collection in Texas—and the Lubbock Lake Landmark.
