History

The National Ranching Heritage Center is an outdoor museum on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock devoted to the history of ranching. The idea took shape in 1966 when Texas Tech president Grover Murray appointed a committee to study an outdoor ranching museum; the center was established in 1971 and formally opened during the 1976 Bicentennial with about twenty restored structures. Its 27-acre park now preserves authentic ranch buildings dating from the 1780s to the 1950s, relocated from across the region and furnished to depict ranch life.
