History
The Shapira Hotel at 209 N. Madison Street in Madisonville was built in 1904 by Sarah Shapira, whose family's earlier boarding house on the site had burned in 1903. To rebuild, she purchased two kit houses from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, a turreted Queen Anne and an Eastlake structure, and joined them with parlors and verandas; the building displays fishscale and diamond shingling. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and made a Texas landmark in 1982, it operated for years as the Wills Hotel and is now the Woodbine Inn and Restaurant.
