History

The Jefferson Historical Society Museum occupies a Romanesque Revival former U.S. courthouse and post office, built beginning in 1888 and completed about 1890, which served the federal courts until 1961. The Jefferson Historical Society bought the building in 1965, filling its four floors with Civil War artifacts, antique furniture, Caddo relics, rare china, tools and weapons, and several of Sam Houston's papers.
