History

The Martin County Historical Museum in Stanton occupies the former First National Bank building, built in 1906. The county's history began in 1882 when six German Carmelite friars founded the settlement of Marienfeld ("Field of Mary") and built the first Catholic church in West Texas; the Sisters of Mercy later ran Our Lady of Mercy Academy there for decades. Martin County Convent, Inc. was formed in 1987 to preserve the historic convent and surrounding area.
