History
The Bay City USO Building was erected in 1941-42 on land loaned by the Pierce Estate to serve soldiers from nearby Camp Hulen in Palacios, which had swelled with thousands of troops and civilian workers during World War II mobilization. Reflecting the International Style with banded industrial-sash windows, cantilevered overhangs, and a flat roof, it was one of sixteen USO facilities built that year in Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma and is the only surviving Gulf Coast example. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1999 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
