History

Richard Royster Royall (1798-1840) was a Virginia-born legislator, soldier, and planter who played a leading role early in the Texas Revolution, chairing the permanent council at San Felipe in 1835. In 1936 the State of Texas erected a monument to him in Matagorda Cemetery in recognition of his Revolutionary service. He had died at his Matagorda-area home in 1840.
