History

Sargent Cemetery is a small family burial ground near the coastal community of Sargent in southern Matagorda County, named for George Thomas Sargent, an Englishman who settled permanently in the county in 1838 and became a major landowner. Sargent and his daughter-in-law Sarah Ann drowned in an 1875 hurricane and are buried in the family plot, now within Caney Creek Estates and maintained by local residents. The Texas Historical Commission awarded the cemetery a marker in 1986.
