History

St. Mark Church Cemetery lies in the Bell Bottom community on Caney Creek, about sixteen miles southeast of Bay City, in an area named for A. C. Bell, who bought and developed the land in the late 1800s. The settlement was established around 1905 by two Black families who purchased small tracts from Bell, and by the 20th century it was served by St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and its cemetery, both of which still appeared on county maps as late as 1990.
