History

Cedarvale Cemetery, historically called the Bay City Cemetery, was organized on February 28, 1896, when community leaders W. C. Carpenter, John W. Gaines, John W. White, D. P. Moore, and J. M. Sims chartered the Bay City Cemetery Association. Its origins trace to the 1896 hunting-accident death of Rufus A. Mathis, buried on land owned by D. P. Moore, who formally deeded four acres for the cemetery that March. Many of Bay City's early settlers are buried here, and the association enlarged the grounds over the following decades.
