History
The Fort Duncan Museum occupies the restored commander's headquarters of Fort Duncan, a U.S. Army post established in 1849 to guard the first American settlement on this stretch of the Rio Grande and named for Mexican-American War hero Col. James Duncan. The fort protected the border, served the Confederate cotton trade during the Civil War, and was the organizing site of the Black Seminole Scouts. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the site retains seven original buildings, with the museum displaying local and military history.
