History

Camp San Saba Cemetery serves the community of Camp San Saba in southeastern McCulloch County, on FM 1955 near the San Saba River about ten miles from Brady. The settlement, built in the early 1860s, took its name from a mid-1850s Texas Ranger camp established to guard settlers against raids; John O. Meusebach had met a Comanche council nearby in 1847. The cemetery's earliest recorded burial is that of Benjamin J. Smith, killed in an Indian attack, and several soldiers are also interred here.
