History

Oakwood Cemetery, a 157-acre burial ground on Waco's south side, was founded in 1878 to relieve overcrowding at the city's original First Street Cemetery. The site had earlier been an abandoned horse racetrack and the location of Waco's first agricultural fair in 1874, acquired for the city through the efforts of Mayor E. A. Sturgis and civic leaders such as John Sleeper. Since 1898 it has been managed by the Oakwood Cemetery Association, whose governing board is composed entirely of women, and three Texas governors are among those buried there.
