History

Greenwood Cemetery, established in 1875, is one of Waco's two oldest cemeteries and served as the city's African American burial ground during the era of segregation; for much of its history a chain-link fence separated Black and white sections until the City of Waco removed it in 2016. Interments include Broadway baritone Jules Bledsoe, mathematician and Baylor professor Vivienne Lucille Malone-Mayes, and Negro League player Andrew Cooper. The cemetery also holds Civil War soldiers and a mass grave of victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic.
