History
St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at West grew out of the parish of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption, organized as Czech, Moravian, Slovak, and German Catholic families settled the area; the church was built in 1892, and in 1893 Joseph and Maria Hromadka sold the cemetery land to the diocese. More than 2,700 people are buried here, among them Monsignor Joseph Pelnar (1865-1940), who led the parish for forty years and lies beneath a large stone cross. Many markers bear Czech-language epitaphs, reflecting the community's heritage, and the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the site in 1996.
