History

This cemetery lies at Riesel in southeastern McLennan County, a town that grew up around a cotton gin built by William Henry Riesel in 1890 amid German families who had settled the area after the Civil War. The community was first called Prospect before it took the gin owner's name in 1891. Reflecting that German Lutheran heritage, several of the area's burial grounds carry headstones inscribed in German.
