History

Lilac Cemetery grew from land in the Lilac community that Dr. John Herndon Graves's daughter and son-in-law deeded for the Lilac Baptist Church in 1880, with a second acre deeded by S. T. Rister in 1887, the ground intended for both a church and a cemetery. The earliest marked grave is that of Calvin McCormick (d. 1870), and those interred include Dr. Graves along with several Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I veterans; the cemetery sits at FM 487 and FR 3061.
