History
The Heart of West Texas Museum tells the story of Colorado City, the self-styled 'Mother City of West Texas,' and the heritage of Mitchell County. Originally opened in 1969, it moved in 1991 into the former Kiker-Seale Funeral Home building. Exhibits range from the Lake Champion mammoth skeleton unearthed nearby in 2001 to ranching and cowboy heritage, a Kiowa chief Lone Wolf display, and wartime letters, including correspondence from FDR and Secretary of War Henry Stimson, sent to the family of a local soldier killed in France in World War II.
