History

The Montague County Trails marker, on U.S. 82 east of Nocona and erected in 1986, commemorates the county's role in the great cattle drives. In the 1870s two feeder branches of the Chisholm Trail crossed Montague County as Texas built its cattle empire. Red River Station, in the northern part of the county, served as a major crossing and the last supply point on the trail before the long drive north to Kansas.
