History
Matthew Winston Cartwright (1813-1884), an Alabama native, fought in the Texas Revolution, serving in the siege of Bexar in 1835 and in Captain William Ware's company at the Battle of San Jacinto, and received land bounties for that service. His family had come to the Lake Creek settlement of Austin's second colony in 1832, and he became a substantial Montgomery County landowner. The marker stands near Montgomery.
