The Sterne-Hoya House, built around 1830 by merchant and Texas independence leader Adolphus Sterne, is the oldest house standing on its original site in Nacogdoches. During the Sterne family's residence the home hosted figures such as Davy Crockett, Thomas J. Rusk, and Sam Houston, who was baptized into the Catholic Church in its parlor in 1832 to meet Mexican requirements for holding land. The Hoya family owned the house from 1866 until 1958, when they donated it to the City of Nacogdoches; it now serves as a museum and library and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark on the National Register.
