History

The Nacogdoches Railroad Depot was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911, replacing a wooden depot that had burned after a lightning strike. Rail service, which reached Nacogdoches County in 1883, transformed the local economy from cotton farming toward lumber and helped the town's population grow rapidly in the 1880s. Restored by the city, the depot now houses a small free museum interpreting the role of transportation in the early development of Nacogdoches.
