History

This burial ground on West Alabama Street is the historic Sweetwater Cemetery, the city's oldest public cemetery in Nolan County. Its earliest marked grave — that of infant Purl Ray Scott, who died in 1880 — actually predates the 1881 founding of Sweetwater along the Texas and Pacific Railroad by a year. Known for its handcrafted tombstones and wrought-iron fencing, the cemetery holds pioneers, immigrants, community leaders, and Civil War veterans, and received a Texas historical marker in 1986.
