History

Holy Cross Cemetery in Corpus Christi began in 1866 when Katherine Bray, an Irish immigrant, donated ten acres she had bought from city founder Henry Kinney to the Catholic Church for a cemetery, adding twenty more acres in 1869. Originally called Mt. Calvary, it is the burial place of Civil War veterans, victims of the 1867 yellow fever epidemic and the 1919 hurricane, and early bishops and priests of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, which still manages the grounds.
