History

Sugar Hill Cemetery serves the former farming community of Sugar Hill (also called Broome) in western Panola County, first settled in 1845. Terrell Henson deeded land in 1855 reserving an acre for a graveyard and meeting house; the earliest marked grave is that of Thomas C. Jones (d. 1861), and settler Elijah Wyatt is believed buried here in 1849. The cemetery holds Civil War and World War II veterans and a section honoring 33 enslaved people, and the Texas Historical Commission marked it in 1999.
