History

Centennial Cemetery serves the Centennial community on FM 123 in southeastern Panola County, a settlement founded before 1850, and the cemetery itself was organized in 1858. Historically the grounds were divided into white and Black sections, the latter now maintained separately as the Centennial Afro-American Cemetery. In that section's early years, family and friends dug graves and made homemade caskets by hand, walking or later muling the deceased to burial with heads facing east, a practice rooted in the belief that the dead should be ready to rise at the resurrection.
