History

Clayton Cemetery lies beside Bethel Baptist Church on State Highway 315, about six miles west of Carthage in Panola County. Bethel Baptist was organized in September 1843 by the pioneer minister Rev. Isaac Reed and is among the oldest churches in the county; the State of Texas erected a monument to it in 1936. The congregation moved to its present site in 1874, and the adjoining cemetery has since grown, with a newer section added as the original filled.
