History

This Panola County burial ground, known as the Old Camp Ground, grew out of the old-time camp meetings held on the site into the early 1900s, which gave it its name. It was the location of Pisgah Methodist Church, organized in 1848 before the congregation moved to a new site in 1913. Oral tradition holds that both Black and white residents were buried here, and early graves were marked in the East Texas custom of wooden 'pens' and sheds, most of which were later removed. Of an estimated 80 to 100 graves, only a handful remain identifiable.
